Blood pressure with Chinese translation

Every fourth Thursday, there is a blood pressure clinic held at the Malden Council on Aging. It is sponsored by Hallmark VNA. A Chinese translator is available.

Senior picnic

Mayor Howard's senior picnic will be held Wednesday, Sept. 6, 4-6 p.m. at Macdonald Stadium on Pearl Street. Entertainment and food will be provided. Raffles will be held.

Free senior health fair

Older adults in the community are invited to attend a Free Senior Health Fair Friday, Sept. 8, 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., at the Malden Senior Citizens Center, Government Center, 200 Pleasant St. The event will include screenings, community resource information, demonstrations and give-a-ways.

Sponsored by Hallmark Health Visiting Nurse Association and the Malden Council on Aging, there will be multiple health screenings, including blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol. Information from a variety of community resources will be among the offerings as well.

Refreshments will be provided.

Gastrointestinal Issues

The Hallmark Health VNA and the Malden COA will be presenting a health presentation on Gastrointestinal Issues, including acid reflux to constipation, presented by Dr. Michael Doupe, and a resident from Tufts University Family Practice Residency Program at the Malden Family Health Center, on Tuesday, Sept. 12, 3 p.m., at the Senior Center, 200 Pleasant St., room 121. A free, light supper will be served.

Safe Driving program

In an effort to make roads safer, the Registry of Motor Vehicles will present Safe Driving, a free, hour-long program designed to educate and encourage elder drivers to be the best drivers possible, on Tuesday, Sept. 19, 3 p.m., at the Malden Senior Center, 200 Pleasant St., in room 121.

A representative from the RMV will present the program and highlight issues facing elder drivers. The program includes safe driving tips and information on how age affects one's driving and the most frequent collisions for elder drivers. A list of warning signs of unsafe driving is provided to help drivers minimize their driving risk. The benefits of not driving a vehicle and suggestions of ways to preserve one's independence without a license are also discussed.

A free, light supper will follow the presentation.

'Akeelaha and the Bee' screening

The Malden Senior Center, 200 Pleasant St., shows newly released videos and offers a free light supper every last Tuesday of the month. The next video, "Akeelaha and the Bee," will be shown Tuesday, Sept. 26, 3:30 p.m. The movie is about an 11-year-old girl from south Los Angeles with a gift for words.

'The Nutcracker and High Tea'

The Malden Council on Aging is planning a trip to "The Nutcracker and High Tea" Sunday, Dec. 10. The bus will leave the center, 2 p.m., and at the Hyatt Regency Hotel there will be a "Tea and Talk" with a Boston Ballet speaker, 3-5 p.m. This will include tea sandwiches, hot and cold beverages and the Hyatt Regency Boston's signature chocolate fondue.

Participants will then go to see "The Nutcracker," 5:30 p.m., orchestra seats.

Cost is $70. Transportation is included. Performance is on a first come, first serve basis. Limit 35 seats. Payment is due immediately, and made payable to: Patricia Peluso, and mailed to: the Senior Center, 200 Pleasant St., Room 121, Malden, 02148.

Free legal advice for seniors

The Malden Council on Aging invites seniors to two hours a month of free legal advice with private meeting in half-hour intervals by appointment only Aug. 8 and Sept. 5, 2-4 p.m., at the computer room, senior center, 200 Pleasant St., Room 121. Kenneth J. Simmons Jr., Esq. will volunteer his time at the center.

Attorney Simmons recently visited the senior center and spoke about health care proxies, durable powers of attorney and wills (probate vs. non-probate assets) and was requested to return by popular demand.

Senior exercise classes

Hallmark Health sponsors the following exercise classes designed for older adults at the Monsignor Neagle Apartments, 350 Charles St. in Malden.

A weight training class is held Thursdays, 9:30-10:20 a.m. Participants must have clearance from their doctor to participate. For information, call Mary Joyce, at 781-338-7908.

An aerobics program is on Thursdays, 10:30-11:20 a.m. Three levels are offered. For information, call 781-338-7908.

Walking club 

Leader Tom Glynn will meet walkers at Macdonald Stadium Mondays and Wednesdays at 9 a.m.

Tap dancing class 

Debbie Small will offer tap dancing classes Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m. at the Senior Center, 200 Pleasant St., Room 121.

Arts, crafts and sewing class 

Jackie May offers classes in arts and crafts every third Tuesday of the month, 6-8 p.m. in the community room at 630 Salem St. senior housing. She also offers classes in crafts and sewing every Wednesday, 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Senior Center, 200 Pleasant St., Room 121.

Arts and crafts 

Catherine Jones, resident, will offer an arts and crafts class on the third Thursday of the month, 6-8 p.m. in the Community Room at 557 Pleasant St.

Friendly visitors

The Malden Senior Center Friendly Visitor Program provides volunteers who will spend one or two hours a week with seniors, keeping them company, helping them with chores and errands and accompanying them to activities at the senior center. Match makers

Malden Match Maker Volunteers, sponsored by the Malden Council on Aging, seeks volunteers. Serving elders and disabled veterans, volunteers will spend about an hour each week visiting people in their own neighborhoods. Visits include: watching a movie, conversation, playing cards, reading aloud, taking short walks and assistance with small errands.

English and citizenship classes

The Malden Council on Aging presents conversation English and Citizenship classes sponsored by the Greater Boston Chinese Golden Age Center. Classes start at the end of March and are held in City Hall for Chinese speaking people. For information, call Wendy Wong or Brenda Situ at 617-357-0226.
