What is GERD?
Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (or GERD) is a condition where the acid from the stomach flows back into the food pipe where it causes burning and pain. It is also referred to as Acid Reflux. The most common symptom of GERD is heartburn, which can be felt as a sharp pain or burning sensation in the chest or the back of the throat.
GERD is not very uncommon; many of us have felt these symptoms after a very heavy or spicy meal. However when the symptoms occur very frequently (more than twice a week) then it can become a cause for concern and must be treated. GERD if left untreated can cause serious complications such as permanent damage to the cells lining the food pipe leading to cancer. In some cases the acid can even enter the lungs or harm the enamel of the teeth.
There are many ways in which GERD can be treated. The simplest cure is to make lifestyle changes; avoid greasy and spicy food, not go to bed on a full stomach, and stay away from smoking and alcohol. Mild attacks of GERD can be treated with the help of antacids such as Gelusil and Riopan. There are several other medicines that can be used for treating GERD. In very severe cases surgery may be required.
