What is Heartburn?
Heartburn is a condition caused by Acid Reflux (or GERD). It is felt as a sharp, burning pain in the middle of the chest. It can be felt high in the abdomen, just behind your breastbone, going up to the neck, or in some cases even going up to the back. It is very similar to heart pain (angina) leading many patients to get confused. But heartburn is actually a misnomer, since it has nothing to do with the heart. It usually occurs after eating a very heavy meal or if one lies down immediately after a meal.
The most common cause for heartburn is Acid Reflux. Our stomach has a very strong cocktail of acids and enzymes that help in the digestion of food. Under some circumstances the acid enters the food pipe where it gives rise to the burning and painful condition which is felt as heartburn.
Heartburn is usually not a serious condition; it can easily be treated with some simple antacids such as Gelusil or Mylanta. However if it occurs very frequently (more than twice a week) then it needs thorough investigation and immediate treatment. Acid Reflux (GERD) if left untreated can become serious.
